Minecraft Sequel Casts Spider-Man, Civil War Lead Kirsten Dunst For Alex

Just last year, many can recall the mayhem in theaters across the United States coming from the release of Warner Bros. A Minecraft Movie. Even picking up on the chaos, the distributor held its own ‘Block Party’ showings encouraging the wild outbursts & reactions. As for turnout for the Jared Hess-directed film, it was reported to be the fastest-grossing video game adaptation even outpacing The Super Mario Bros. Movie by 2:1 then.

Of course, this was an instant hit for Warner Bros. and is expected to show signs of a sequel. Within its first week, it was also understood discussions for a sequel was underway with Hess returning to direct the next installment. Fast-forward to October this past fall, Warner Bros. officially confirmed that the Minecraft sequel will hit theaters in 2027 on July 23rd.

Now with pieces starting to be put into place, a major casting has been revealed for A Minecraft Movie 2. Reported by Deadline, Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man, Civil War) is joining the Minecraft cast for the role of Alex. As for those unfamiliar, she is essentially the female equivalent to Steve in Minecraft. She was teased after the credits rolled in the first film.

Dunst is to star alongside returning actors Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Fast X), Jack Black (Borderlands, Anaconda), Danielle Brooks (Peacemaker, Orange is the New Black), Matt Berry (Fallout, The Wild Robot) and Jennifer Coolidge (American Pie, The White Lotus). Screenwriter Chris Galletta is also returning to pen the sequel as well alongside Hess in the director’s chair. 

Funny enough, Dunst has shared interest in starring in the Minecraft sequel previously. Speaking to Town & Country, Dunst expressed her desire for the film with her children being really big fans of the movie and join a production with a major payout. “Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money?” she said then.
